The purpose of this seminar is to familiarise students with the most import areas and aspects of European Union (EU) external relations and the EU as an actor in global politics. In the first part of the course, we will look at the big picture of the EU’s external policy: the historical context and ways to conceptualise the EU’s role in international relations. In Part II, we will concentrate on the most important policy areas of the EU external relations: foreign policy, security and defence policy, trade policy, development policy, as well as the EU external environmental policy and migration policy. Part III will focus on the geographical dimension and relations with important regions/countries (European Neighbourhood Policy and transatlantic relations). In the final part, we will deal with the question of what kind of power the EU constitutes. Students should have already attended a course on European Integration or attained solid knowledge of the EU by other means (e.g. read one of the background readings below).

This course will be taught as a seminar. Course language is English.
