This course will be based on Adele Reinhartz's recently published second edition of Bible and Cinema: An Introduction (London/New York 2022). Thus, we will follow the general structure of this book, considering Old Testament and New Testament epics, the Old Testament depicted in modern guise, Christ-figure films, films about movies and morals, and films about future worlds. We will also consider women in films as well as Jews and Judaism in films.
Furthermore, guest lectures will be given in this course by Adele Reinhartz and by Reinhold Zwick, both experts in the field of Bible and Cinema.
Additionally, there will be time devoted during each class-meeting to discussing the questions in the respective chapters from Reinhartz's text. Also, we will watch a short video clip each week from the corresponding film genre and discuss the relevent theological questions raised by this scene.
