Displayed in timetable as: KG III

Hours per week: 4

Credits: 4,0

Language of instruction: German

Min. | Max. participants: 3 | -

Requirements / organisational issues:
Addressed to:
All theology students and listeners of all faculties. Exam candidates to review the topics.

The lecture imparts in-depth basic knowledge of a central epoch of Protestant church history and is therefore suitable for both first-year students and exam candidates.

Form of work:
The lecture takes place in presence form. This offers the advantage that comprehension and discussion questions can be asked at any time and references to the present can become clear. Experience has shown that this makes it much easier to assimilate the material.

Compulsory attendance:
According to the legal regulations, attendance is not compulsory. For active participation, however, two of three short and simple tests (15 min.) on the main topics of the lecture must be completed (50%). The tests take place within the lecture times on 24 May, 28 June and 17 July.

Contents:
The lecture offers a basic introduction to the political, social and cultural history of the Reformation and the theological approaches of the leading reformers.
- Perspectives on the Reformation
- Luther's early development up to the Diet of Worms in 1521
- The Reformation in the cities and territories
- The "Radical Reformation"
- Imperial politics and the Reformation 1521-1555
- Calvin
- Confessionalisation, Thirty Years' War and Peace of Westphalia.

Recommended reading list:
Thomas Kaufmann: Geschichte der Reformation, Frankfurt/Main u. Leipzig 2009. (Currently the best monograph on the subject).
Thomas Kaufmann: Erlöste und Verdammte (Redeemed and Damned). Eine Geschichte der Reformation, Munich 2016 (2017 3rd ed.) (more popular, but still very good)
Bernd Moeller: Deutschland im Zeitalter der Reformation (Deutsche Geschichte 4), Göttingen 1999 (short, condensed account);
Horst Rabe: Deutsche Geschichte 1500-1600, Munich 1991 (comprehensive, easily readable account by a historian; very detailed in terms of political history, nevertheless theologically competent).

Additional information:
This lecture provides an overview of church history for the intermediate examination, diploma examination and church exams in our courses of studies (Mag. Theol., B.Ed / M.Ed. etc.).

Audience: all theology students and students from all faculties. Exam candidates for repeating their studies.

Forms of work: Lecture, discussion about central sources of Church History.
