Featuring talks from leading scholars in the field of English literature, this lecture series engages with the poetry of the Poets Laureate from the long eighteenth century to the present day. While in office, the Laureate serves the reigning monarch and is frequently asked (or tacitly expected) to commemorate major events and communicate ideas and values, either of the monarchy or of the country at large. This series of lectures will shed light on the process by which these poets were selected, as well as how their poetic output was shaped by their public office. The fact that some of the poets under discussion are relatively obscure today not only gives us a deeper understanding of the evolving role of Poet Laureate itself but also plots an alternative history of English literature deviating significantly from what has become the common consensus over time.
Each lecture will feature a one-hour talk as well as an opportunity for questions and discussion with scholars from institutions such as Columbia University, the University of Birmingham, the University of Strathclyde, Université de Lille, and Royal Holloway, London.
