Knowledge of the methods of art history forms the basis for an independent examination of the objects and contents which belongs to this academic discipline. The analytical methods developed by art history as a scientific discipline encompass numerous different aspects: The question of the material nature of its objects, that of their forms and meanings in concrete historical references, that of their function and social relevance. In addition, art history, like any other science, is itself the object of its analysis. Thus, the scientific observation of objects goes hand in hand with the critical questioning of the practice practised with them, the premises and the underlying norms. The methods of art history therefore include both the tools of art historical analysis and reflection on its premises and practice.
The lecture familiarises students with the most important methods of art history. It introduces the current discourses surrounding our academic discipline, its objects and the procedures of their interpretation. It shows that these methods have their own history and are the subject of current and inconclusive debates.
