Terra sancta/"the Holy Land" is the name of the region in Christianity that has been known (not only to Christians) as Palestine since the Roman Empire. The term originated at the time of the Constantinian church when Christians began to make pilgrimages to the sites of the Bible and especially to the destroyed Jewish capital Jerusalem. The oldest itinerary of such a journey dates back to the year 333, but Empress Helena already showed interest in the region and Emperor Constantine built two of his most important early basilicas here. The pilgrimage to the "Holy Land" was established (and regularly endangered) from then on. It became a main reason for the Crusades in the Middle Ages and is still a pious practice in worldwide Christianity today.
The seminar deals with different epochs and Christian perspectives on the "Holy Land": from antiquity to modern times, from the early church to the latest significant developments in church history.
