Emotions form an essential aspect of human existence touching on all aspects of life. Research on emotions has become well established in the humanities including the historical disciplines, but the “affective turn” is still relatively recent in the Ancient Near Eastern studies. Research on emotions in the ancient world provide both enriching and new insights on conceptual, emotional and life-worlds of people in the past in their historical contexts but can also be full of theoretical and interpretative challenges. The seminar offers an introduction to the burgeoning field of historical emotion studies with a focus on ancient Mesopotamia and Hittite Anatolia, sounding the potentials and limits of different theoretical and methodological approaches as well as various sources (textual, iconographic, archaeological).
Based on readings of recent publications on the subject and on discussions of specific case studies drawn from selected primary sources, we will engage with different topics and contexts of emotional experiences, such as: emotions as a linguistic/conceptual domain in Ancient Near Eastern languages; emotions and literature; emotions and politics; emotions and religious experiences/practices; emotions and gender concepts/relations; emotions in daily life; emotions and sickness, health and healing).
