Dear Students, 

Before the first lesson takes place, the following is recommended: 

- please register on ILIAS (a learning platform): the whole course communication will be carried out via this learning platform. 

- familiarise yourself with ILIAS and especially with the documents which are to be found in the folders marked "Resource" and "Fachsprachlicher Gebrauch". 

Before the course begins, you should already have an idea of what endocrinology and infectiology are about and, importantly, what the features of medical texts are.

Endocrinology is a branch of biology and medicine dealing with the endocrine system, its diseases, and its specific secretions known as hormones. It is also concerned with the integration of developmental events proliferation, growth, and differentiation, and the psychological or behavioural activities of metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sleep, digestion, respiration, excretion, mood, stress, lactation, movement, reproduction, and sensory perception caused by hormones. It is the study of the endocrine system in the human body. The field of infectiology (aka infectious disease), is a medical speciality dealing with the diagnosis, control and treatment of infections. Infectious disease is historically associated with travel medicine and tropical medicine, as many diseases acquired in tropical and subtropical areas are infectious in nature.

Content:  This course will include various topics from the areas of endocrinology e.g. Diabetes mellitus, osteoporosis, thyroid disorders and their respective diagnoses and treatments. In infectiology (infectious diseases), e.g. viral and bacterial infections - hepatitis, gastrointestinal infections - helicobacter-infections, zoonotic diseases - Lyme-borreliosis, etc. These illnesses will be investigated using case studies and other means. 

A translation of a medical text will be assigned each week and worked through during the lesson; additionally, course participants will create a medical glossary for the outgoing text.

Evaluation:  Each translation and glossary will be evaluated and given a grade. The homework assignments are mandatory.

Additional information:
- Exchange students are welcome. A rough idea about endocrinology and infectious diseases would be helpful but not necessary. 

- Exchange students (Erasmus) will be required to take an exam at the end of the course in order to receive a grade. 

- Registration to "sit  in" as a listener (Hörer) is possible, but students do not receive a grade but a "supplementary benefit" is given in the BA transcript.

Digital teaching:
The course will be held on the campus in WS 2023-24. However, the course can also be found on the learning platform ILIAS. You have access to all the material you require to complete this course.

In addition to the usual written material, you will find audio files giving you information, instructions and tips.
