The famous prize question of the Berlin Academy of Sciences "Est-il utile au Peuple d'etre trompe?" (1780) shook up the scholarly world and remains relevant today as a communicative (and translational?) problem.
The question marked a rupture: For it was with this question, at the latest, that the Enlightenment ceased to be a conversation among scholars - that is, Enlightenment thinkers themselves - and began to search for new addressees, the people who were indeed to be educated, and for the means of conversing with them. In the process, not only conceptual, social, and cognitive boundaries were crossed, but often linguistic ones. What role did translation play in the dissemination of knowledge? Did it always contribute to emancipation and democratization?
We will approach these translational phenomena by means of selected examples from concrete linguistic and cultural areas. New languages and transfer processes not yet presented in the relevant literature will also be explored in the context of independent research projects.
