Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Inhalt: In this course, participants will get a profound insight into one of the four core domains of linguistics (Phonetics/Phonology, Morphology, Syntax, Semantics/Lexicon). Especially future teachers of English need to have a basic understanding of the sound system of the language they study and are going to teach. Therefore, this course aims at providing students with general theoretical approaches to speech sounds and how they are used in the English language. The class will introduce the English phoneme inventory (segmental aspects) and discuss issues of connected speech such as stress/accent and intonation (suprasegmental aspects) and how they contribute to meaning construction/negotiate meaning in the spoken/oral medium. Special emphasis will be laid on the acquisition of English phonology as a second language by foreign learners as well as on differences in the sound system between the two major varieties British English and American English. In order to obtain credit, participants in the proseminar are expected to prepare a (group) presentation in class and a subsequent term paper.
