Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Requirements for receiving credit are regular attendance, completion of *all* reading assignments, informed contributions to class discussions and assignments, a brief oral presentation, and a term paper.
Inhalt: Rather than describing all regional and social varieties of American English, this course will focus on a selection of representative varieties of American English and on the consequences of their usage (e.g. language attitudes, ethnic variations, bilingual education, etc.) The course thus spotlights sociolinguistics issues in the U.S. and counts as a linguistic _Proseminar_ in American Studies.
Empfohlene Literatur: Course readings will be provided in a course pack available at a copy shop at the beginning of the semester. Further texts will be posted on the Web or in ReaderPlus.
