Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: Core elements of the course: 1) Introduction. Applications of ultrafast phenomena in science and technology. 2) Timescales of physical phenomena: Ultrafast (~10-12 – 10-15 s) phenomena in solids, liquids and gases. 3) Ultrafast lasers: generation and characterization of ultrashort laser pulses 4) Basics of nonlinear optics. Nonlinear wave conversion. 5) Introduction to ultrafast spectroscopy techniques: - transient absorption - ultrafast terahertz spectroscopy - time-resolved (magneto-optical) Kerr effect spectroscopy - sum-frequency generation - two-dimensional infrared spectroscopy - attosecond spectroscopy Please contact Prof. Dmitry Turchinovich (turchino@mpip-mainz.mpg.de) or Prof. Mischa Bonn (bonn@mpip-mainz.mpg.de) for any questions regarding this course. The course takes place once a week, and will be combined with lab visits. The lecture location will depend on the number of course participants. The recommendations regarding the day of the week for the lecture can be submitted to Prof. D. Turchinovich by email.
