Inhalt: Jane Austen's novels have continuously fascinated their readers. In the first half of the summer semester, we will analyse Pride and Prejudice (1813) and Mansfield Park (1814), looking in particular at dialogue, interaction, space and place, character, gender roles, social class, and the representation of manners and ethical questions. We will then move on to literary and filmic adaptations. Particularly the love story between Elizabeth and Darcy, who both are at first reluctant to admit their fascination with each other, has led to several sequels, among them Emma Tennant's novel Pemberley (1993). We will also consider some film version, ranging from "classic" and "faithful" renderings of the texts to the Bollywood version Bride and Prejudice (2004). We will also deal with the cult established around Jane Austen as a cultural phenomenon. In some weeks, films will be shown on Tuesdays from 18.00 to 20.00. Attendance of the film sessions is voluntary but recommended.
