Inhalt: Whether we like it or not, European nation states are no longer fully sovereign. Treaties and European summits are only the most visible symbols of an integration process that has changed the shape of everyday politics in all EU member states including Germany. On the other hand, member state governments are still willing and able to sideline supranational European institutions such as the Commission and the European Parliament. The sage of the ongoing attempts to "save" the Euro is just one case in point. This seminar looks into the impact "Europe" has on German politics as well as on Germany's attempts to shape the integration process.

Zusätzliche Informationen: Students who wish to obtain a "Schein" or a "Modulabschlußprüfung" will have to write an essay. You will pick your essay titles/topics from a list that I will distribute during the course of the seminar. Occasionally, students will be asked to give short presentations on current events. Each weekly session consists of a lecture, followed by group work and class-discussions. Students are not required to give lengthy presentations ("Referate"). I do, however, expect that you attend classes well-prepared, and that you are willing and able to participate in class discussions. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary that you regularly read the assigned texts.
