Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: The Victorian Age is frequently associated with its strict moral code, rigid class structures and clearly defined gender roles. In contemporary representations of the period, keywords such as the “angel in the house” prevail and the division of life into private and domestic spheres – and a certain double standard associated with them – are often taken as a given. At the same time, a touch of nostalgia overlays most pop-cultural re-imaginations of the Victorian Age, softening aspects that may seem snobbish, intolerant or cruel to the modern mind, which makes it even harder to arrive at an accurate idea of the values and ethics that shaped Victorian society. Working with primary sources from the period, this course aims to paint a more nuanced picture of the mindset and morals of 19th century England – starting with the fact that there is no one “Victorian mindset”. We will consider the factors in upbringing, education and society that contributed to a person’s ideas of morality, take a look at key concepts of right and wrong from the period and review examples of how they were put into practice. Weekly readings, available via the course Reader, are a mandatory part of this course.
