Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
When Elizabeth I’s father, Henry VIII came to the throne, England was little more than an island on the outer edges of mainland Europe; by the time she died, 94 years later, it was one of the leading world powers and a cultural giant. We will use an examination of life in Elizabeth’s capital city to explore the driving forces behind such incredible development and get inside the day-to-day life of its inhabitants and visitors, noble and humble, native as well as foreign, by studying certain key aspects.

The method will include critical readings and discussions each week of key primary and secondary texts, pictures and portraits, partly in mini-group brain-storming, partly via participants’ in-class mini-presentations. Everyone will be required not only to give at least one mini-presentation (for which there will be feedback) but also to participate ACTIVELY in the group discussions in a manner clearly indicating that they have prepared, understood and thought about the material to be read for each week. Spot tests on the set material will occur if it becomes clear that the texts are not being appropriately prepared, with consequences if one or more tests are failed.

Topics will probably include the following (currently ‘work in progress’, while I see what materials are available in the University and Department Library):

-          faith & reason, superstition & science, including the importance and changing function of religion during the Tudor period

-          government & governance, and the special role of the City of London

-          status & rank

-          transportation: roads & rivers

-          trade & commerce (including the rapid growth of banking, and its consequences, as well as the function and power of the guilds)

-          everyday life (food & drink; health; education; pleasures & pastimes; costumes & customs)

-          reading & publishing (major developments at this time), and the use of written work to influence the public: political and ‘sensational news’ pamphlets, sermons (some 40 pages long!), drama, ballads etc.

-          important figures of the time.

This all should provide those people wishing to write a term paper (2,500 words +/- 5-10%) in the class with sufficient ideas for possible topics.

I will provide you with a reference bank of materials. I expect we will use two to three core texts, and will make other texts and materials available in some suitable form – more in the first class session!

Note: this seminar can be taken separately from my CS IV “Shakespeare’s London & Shakespeare’s Globe” course with its one-week excursion to London. However, the two courses do complement each other very well!
