Inhalt: This course is dedicated to a social phenomenon that in contemporary public discourse is predominantly negatively connoted and, accordingly, often treated in surprisingly simplistic ways. Its goal, by contrast, is to shed light on the diverse manifestations of conservatism in British culture since the 18th century. Rather than treating conservatism in a party-political sense, it will explore it as a general mentality or cultural stance whose variants are united by the rejection of radically collectivist and utopian world views and the emphasis on individual responsibility and prudence.
Empfohlene Literatur: The readings to be discussed in class will be made available prior to the semester (via JGU Reader). Suggested reading in preparation for this class: Roger Scruton, Conservatism: Ideas in Profile (2017).
