Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Familiarity with all our texts is a precondition to gain credits for this seminar. Active participation is a necessity.

Inhalt:
The employment of fictional characters is a key strategy of storytelling. Students, however, often seem to encounter problems applying adequate frameworks of analysis. Some introductory handbooks in literary science can partly be blamed for this making use of labels that are too reductive and do not do justice to the complexities of this literary phenomenon. What can be said about fictional characters apart from them being “flat” or “round”? This seminar wants to provide students with a toolbox of methods and means of analysis ranging from reader reception theory to questions of stylistics. Analysing a wide range of texts from the 16th to the 21st century, we will explore fictional characters in different modes of writing and at different points in time. Our discussion will also deal with cultural phenomena related to characters such as fan fiction or the various Jane Austen societies. Furthermore, we will use theoretical approaches including texts by Jonathan Culpeper, Fotis Jannidis, Katja Mellmann and Alan Palmer.

Empfohlene Literatur:
In preparation for this seminar, please read the following texts in advance:

  • William Shakespeare: Othello (Arden Shakespeare)
  • Jane Austen: Persuasion (Oxford World’s Classics)
  • Alan Moore: Watchmen (DC Comics)

If you do not yet own a personal copy of these books, try to purchase the editions as indicated above. Other editions, however, are fine as well. Additional texts and course material will be made available.
