Inhalt: This proseminar will provide a systematic introduction to morphology. The main concerns are the nature and productivity of word-formation processes and the ways in which word-formation interacts with phonology, syntax, and the lexicon. In the course of this proseminar questions will be tackled such as: What is a word?, Is a lot of one word or three words?, What kinds of morphemes are there and what functions do they have?, Why can’t we say *I goed and *I taked?, Why can we say unhappy but not *unsad?, and many more. Students might want to refresh their knowledge about the basics of phonetic transcription (IPA) prior to the start of this seminar. Assessment: - regular attendance and active participation in class - oral presentation (poster or talk) - written assignments/homework - term paper
