Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: The aim of this course is to introduce major conversations in critical theory and methodology in order to understand the theoretical lineage that provides a foundation for today’s literary and cultural studies. By focusing primarily on texts written in the last few decades, we will trace the major debates that shape the terrain of scholarship into which you yourselves are entering. In reading important recent theoretical works, our task will be two-pronged: 1) to close read and engage deeply with each individual text on its own terms, and 2) to identify and critique the ways in which the texts intersect and diverge. A major emphasis will be not only on content, but on methodology: what is it, how do we choose one, and what difference does it make? The goal is therefore for you to hone your critical reading and thinking skills while also surveying significant concepts and traditions in critical theory.
