Inhalt: The proseminar introduces students to the field of semantics before concentrating on the topic of frame semantics. Formulated and fleshed out by Charles Fillmore in the 1970s and 1980s, frame semantics follow the idea that the meaning of a word or even a grammatical construction cannot be understood without access to all essential contextual knowledge (the ‘frame’) of that word. The theory of frame semantics is effectively used in speech recognition software, chat bots and other artificial intelligence applications, making it an important part of contemporary applied linguistics. Additionally, the course will convey basic academic working skills like citation and research that go beyond the conventional academic standard. Students will learn, for example, how the effectively work with and quote new media such as video games, internet streams or podcasts.
