Learning Outcomes
· At the end of the course, students should be able to
· Identify central authors and critical theories in Cultural Studies
· Explain key terms associated with those authors and theories
· Identify central topics and issues relevant to Game Studies
· Explain key terms and issues of Game Studies
· Discuss and reflect critically on theories and issues from both fields
To reach these goals, students will
· Close read, summarize, and discuss in groups central Cultural Studies and Game Studies texts
· Verbally explain the concepts and issues introduced in those texts
· Critically reflect on the possibilities and limitations of said texts
· Document class discussions in a class wiki
· Apply critical theories and knowledge about issues in both fields to video games as analytical objects
· Write and reflect on their reading and analysis experiences in a final written exam
Inhalt:
In this Wissentschaftliche Übung we survey central theories and seminal texts of Cultural Studies and apply them to video games. Thematically, the course will be split into three parts: First we will build a theoretical tool kit by acquainting ourselves with three central theories of Cultural Studies: Marxian analysis, gender and queer theory, and structuralism / deconstruction. In a second step, we will familiarize ourselves with video games as analytical objects and then use our Cultural Studies theory tool kit to analyze them. Doing so will help us think about how games as complex media objects generate meaning. Finally, we will reflect critically on the strengths and weaknesses of our analytic tools and objects. The course will follow a workshop format, which means we will alternate between independent group work and plenary discussion and presentation phases.

All materials will be provided electronically through ILIAS or the university library (UB). Please ensure that you have a working internet connection and a JGU user account. You should bring a laptop or tablet in addition to your other writing materials, as you will be required to perform group work during class sessions.
