Inhalt: In the middle ages, Scotland was dismissed as the edge of civilisation, a wild land with backward, uncouth people. In this course we will explore how Scotland was in fact intimately connected with the rest of medieval Europe. Scotland had distinctive features, such as its highly decentralised government throughout the middle ages. However, characteristics common to medieval Europe were also present in Scotland, such as the institutions of the church which were such a pervasive feature of medieval life. Also, there is much evidence of direct interaction between Scotland and other parts of Europe, such as the movement of scholars between educational institutions and trade between Scotland and other European ports. This course will examine Scotland’s history from the mysterious and largely unknowable centuries before 1100 through to the beginning of the sixteenth century. It will cover themes such as the medieval church, Gaelic Scotland and medieval art and literature. It will consider what was distinctive about medieval Scotland, but also what medieval Scotland can tell us about medieval Europe as a whole.
