Inhalt:
Historiographic works are the most important sources for researching the Byzantine world. There are certainly other significant source genres, but historiography grants us greater narratives and contexts with which the information provided by other sources can be contextualized and understood. However, narratives of the Byzantine historians are not simply reports of past facts. They give often insights about the inclinations of the authors and their world-views. Accordingly, they contain concepts about tradition and truth that are foreign to the most modern readers. Recently, the complexity of the Byzantine historiography was the subject of general handbooks and monographs about specific authors.
The goal of this workshop is to present the participants an overview of the historiographical production in Byzantium between the 9th to the 13th century.
The following aspects will be covered
• Who were the historians in the Middle Byzantine Period?
• How did the Byzantine historians understand the past? How did the Byzantines conceive their own History?
• How were Histories written? Were they simply reports of facts or did they have literary aspirations?
• For whom did the historians write? Who was the readership of Byzantine historiography?
As part of the workshop, scholarly texts, as well as source passages, will be discussed and presented by the participants. Current subjects that relate to the subject of the workshop (e.g. fake news) will be also put into discussion.
