Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
Summer School “Shakespeare’s London and Shakespeare’s Globe”, 8th-15th August 2020 (10 a.m. till 6 p.m.)

Due to the current health and travel situation, I have had to change the nature of this course. It will be conducted as a one-week seminar at Mainz University, in the course of which we will

·         ‘visit’ some 20 sites of Shakespearean importance in central London virtually, using photos, sound and film clips where available, and mini-presentations (max. 3 minutes each!) from participants

·         ‘explore’ Shakespeare’s Globe virtually, using this to examine Tudor playhouses and how they functioned

·         prepare, discuss and watch two Shakespeare performances on DVD from Shakespeare’s Globe: what is so different about acting (and watching a play) in an open-air, daylit theatre with next to no scenery, where you can see 3,000 spectators all the time???

·         do workshops exploring how an Elizabethan actor will have prepared his role and rehearsed, helping you experience Elizabethan drama ‘from the inside’, something living – the ‘physicality’ of the language – rather than as a dry literary text to be studied and academically, clinically analysed

·         investigate other facets of Shakespeare’s London, e.g. some fundamental aspects of living in Elizabethan London, as well as Tudor dancing and cursing!

Unlike the original plan, there will not be two workshops in Mainz in June: instead, this will be incorporated into the week in August. Our first working day will be Saturday, 8th August, followed by 6 working days from Monday, 10th to Saturday, 15th August.

Everything will be in English, expanding your confidence in using the language.

The excursion, formally a “Summer School”, can be taken as a wide range of English Literature & Culture (ELC) Seminare for the BA, BEd, MA and MEd study programmes, as well as an MA elective.

  • BA students can take the course as Seminar ELC 123 or 313, or CS II ELC (131) or CS IV (211).
  • BEd students can take it as ELC 131 (CS II ELC) or  Seminar English Literature and Culture (313).
  • MA students can take it as Seminar ELC 512 or CS V ELC (521), or alternatively as an elective.
  • MEd students can take it as ELC 211 (CS IV ELC), Seminar ELC 512 (with the essay as module-exam form), or CS V ELC (521).

Check in the relevant Prüfungsordnung for YOU what the writing requirements – if any – of the course type in question is.
