Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: This lecture will cover poetry, prose, and drama that the Victorian era (1837-1901) regarded as central and canonical. Important authors and their works will be approached through selected examples. These will be presented both in the context of the ideologies of their own times and from our present critical perspectives. They will display many of the shifts in politics, the economy, religion and science as well as gender debates that characterize Victorianism. Among the writers covered are the poets Alfred Lord Tennyson, Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning and Christina Rossetti, the novelists Charles Dickens, Elizabeth Gaskell, George Eliot [mary anne evans] and Anthony Trollope, the dramatists Dion Boucicault, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, Arthur Hugh Pinero and Oscar Wilde, and the essayists Thomas Carlyle, John Stuart Mill and Matthew Arnold. No preparatory reading is necessary for these lectures. They will consist of Powerpoint presentations with added audi commentary and a forum for questions and debates. The presentations contain self-test questions and texts for further reading. For those needing credits for more than active attendance, there wll be a short take home exam emailed on the date of the last lecture slot. It has to be returned by email within 24 hours.
