Inhalt:
The seminar focuses on the violent conflict in Yemen and analyses its roots, impacts and dynamics. After an eventful history characterised by conflict and violence, a civil war between state institutions and Houthi-Militias as well as Al-Qaida affiliates broke out in 2013 making the country one of the poorest places on earth and leading to a severe humanitarian crisis.

After engaging with terms and theories of conflict analysis, we embark on the basic characteristics of the conflict such as the conflict parties, conflict dynamics as well as local, regional and international actors and their perspectives. Afterwards, we focus on conflict transformation processes and opportunities such as mediation attempts, transitional justice efforts as well as reconciliation processes. Specific features of this seminar constitute the explicit engagement with local perspectives and critical approaches towards the conflict.

The seminar takes place as cross-site project between six German universities and thus involves an innovative teaching format based on cross-site teaching with 170 students and six supervisors which engage with each other in a digital setting. In addition, input is provided by a wide range of experts from several universities and think tanks, including local perspectives from Yemen.

Participating universities:

- Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg

- Eberhard-Karls-Universität Tübingen

- Otto-von-Guericke-Universität Magdeburg

- Philipps-Universität Marburg

- Johannes Gutenberg-University Mainz

- Universität Hamburg

Digitale Lehre:
Single sessions take place as joint, interactive conferences in a digital setting to which we occasionally also invite the experts for direct contact. Working groups involve cross-site groups between students from all universities as well as Mainz-specific groups. Single sessions will be largely based on synchronous online teaching involving either the local Mainz-group or all participating students and supervisors. As such, you should be able to attend the sessions (Monday, 2 p.m. – 4 p.m.)
