Inhalt: Considered a turning point in the development of Turkish historical fiction, Orhan Pamuk’s Beyaz Kale [the white castle] also played a crucial role in Pamuk’s rise to fame and success outside of Turkey. The seminar aims at discussing the novel both in the context of Pamuk’s oeuvre and world literature. Focusing on different literary and extra-literary aspects of the novel, we will reflect on questions such as East-West encounters, universality vs. individuality, the ontology of the Self, master-slave relation, history and fiction, art and life. The seminar will be accompanied by a close reading of the novel, looking into its stylistic and linguistic peculiarities. The Seminar will be in English.
