Inhalt: The term “sentimental” is nowadays a derogatory one. Yet when it emerged in the 18th century it represented an attempt to link rational Enlightenment philosophy with an increasing awareness of the body, but also emotions and the way in which they manifest themselves. Philosophers like Shaftesbury believed that morality expressed itself in bodily form through sentiments. The seminar will study samples of these ideas before analysing three sentimental novels. Samuel Richardson’s Pamela, or, Virtue Rewarded (1740) created a fashion for epistolary novels and became a world-wide bestseller. Henry Mackenzie’s The Man of Feeling (1771) depicts a “new man” of the time and his problems, while Charlotte Lennox’s The Female Quixote; or, The Adventures of Arabella (1752) already makes fun of a female protagonist who is too fond of and too much under the influence of sentimental novels. Students are encouraged to acquire their own copies of the novels, but PDF files will also be provided.
