Inhalt: This seminar will introduce students to the thriving contemporary literature of Nigeria in the shape of three novels: Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie's Half of a Yellow Sun (2006), Chigozie Obioma's The Fishermen (2015) and Oyinkan Braithwaite's, My Sister, the Serial Killer (2018). After familiarising students with the specific situation of Nigeria in Africa and the world and the history of its literary production, it will read short texts by two important Nigerian authors, Chinua Achebe and Ben Okri, before embarking on a critical reading of the above contemporary novels. Recurring themes such as gender, family, and politics, but also belief, superstition and aspiration, will be discussed, literary strategies compared, and questions about specifics of contemporary African writing will be asked. Students are asked to acquire copies of the three novels. Lernziele Einblick in die Gegenwartsromane Nigerias und ihre kulturellen Hintergründe
