Inhalt: Kurze Beschreibung der Veranstaltung The relation between science and democracy is controversial. While some scholars claim that science is intrinsically democratic, others dismiss this view as preposterous. Some hold that science can only flourish in a democratic society, some others take it that it is the other way around, and that democracies depend on science. Others again emphasise the tension and potential conflicts between democratic decision making and the meritocratic structure of science and scientific expertise. In the seminar, we shall consider seminal contributions to the controversies concerning the relation of science and democracy, including some classical accounts (Robert K. Merton, Michael Polanyi), papers by outsiders (Paul Feyerabend), and recent work (Philip Kitcher, Heather Douglas?). Lernziele: Kenntnisse von Klassikern und neueren Ansätzen zur umstrittenen Frage des Verhältnisses von Wissenschaft und Demokratie. Erfahrung im interdisziplinären Austausch.
Zusätzliche Informationen: Lehrender Cornelis Menke is Professor in History and Philosophy of Science and Director of General Studies at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. He main interest is in Philosophy of science and science studies, and particularly in methodology, philosophy of statistics, and pragmatism. Cornelis Menke read Philosophy, Classics, and Physics at Humboldt University of Berlin, and holds a PhD in Philosophy from Bielefeld University. He was Dilthey Fellow of Volkswagen Foundation, junior research group leader at the Center for Interdisciplinary Research, Bielefeld, and elected member and chair of Die Junge Akademie.
