Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: The lecture requires a good standard of English but no other previous knowledge.
Inhalt: The lecture will cover British children's literature from its beginnings in the 18th century all the way to the present. It will also address the changing genres in which writing for children was published. The texts will be situated inside their historical contexts. Their ideological implications will be considered as well as the question of how the ideas and ideals of childhood and the relationship between children and adults changes in the course of the history of children's literature. The lecture includes some famous texts, such as Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Peter Pan and The Lord of the Rings, as well as some that are unknown outside British culture or forgotten even there. It will end with the success story of the Harry Potter novels and related writings.
