Inhalt: Flanked by two world wars, the British interwar period was characterised by a nation recovering from and preparing for great trauma. Nevertheless, the era also stands for progress and modernisation. The understanding of gender and differences between the sexes had been steadily changed ever since the middle of the nineteenth century. By the interwar period, Britain has seen its first feminist movement eventually bring about the women’s franchise in 1928, something which had severely shaken the common understanding of gender. This development can be observed by taking a close look at drama and theatre, which have both always provided an ideal platform for addressing a broad public with new perspectives, including the debate of gender roles and spheres. History plays played a particular role in combining these aspects on the theatrical stage, since historical topics have a unique quality in forming identity. Plays by progressive playwrights, such as Saint Joan (1923) by Bernard Shaw, Will Shakespeare (1921) by Clemence Dane (male alias for Winifred Ashton) and Richard of Bordeaux (1933) by Gordon Daviot (male alias for Elizabeth Mackintosh), followed the traditions set by earlier feminists and used history to challenge gender stereotypes in exceptional ways. During the course of this semester, we will look at the plays by these authors and analyse them with regard to their perception and performance of gender. To achieve this, we will not only place them in the context of the historical topics they cover but also in that of the interwar period itself, which will help us understand how they might have affected society. Together, we will also pick one of these plays to work with more closely through methods of theatre pedagogy. This practical approach serves to enhance our understanding of the play’s workings. No pre-readings are required!
