Inhalt:
In this proseminar, we explore questions of race, gender, and sexuality as well as their intersections in a Southern context as reflected in modern and contemporary short fiction. The term “Southern,” here, refers to a wider, imaginative concept of the South. In other words, we encounter authors not necessarily born and raised in the U.S. South, whose works are preoccupied with the region, nonetheless, and regard the South in a broader national context. Our reading list comprises authors such as Mark Twain, William Faulkner, Ellen Glasgow, Flannery O’Connor, as well as Richard Wright, James Baldwin, Ralph Ellison, Alice Walker, Zora Neale Hurston, and Toni Morrison.

Some of the most relevant topics we discuss encompass white and Black masculinity, and feminism, both Black and white, leading us to intersectional considerations. In this context, we further address issues of heteronormativity and (transgressive) sexuality. Accordingly, we seek to acquire a basic understanding of race, gender, and sexuality in Southern short stories, while simultaneously considering these themes in an interlocking rather than isolated manner.

Disclaimer: Given the time frame and setting in question, namely the U.S. South from the late 19th to the mid-21st century, we will deal, at times, with highly sensitive, upsetting, and uncomfortable issues, including racial and sexual anxieties and violence. I ask all participants to treat those issues with sensitivity and respect to assure that the classroom is a safe space for everyone involved.

Again, since this proseminar thrives on in-class discussions and projects, regular attendance and thorough preparation of the assigned readings are required!
