Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches:
What were the links between the late medieval musical cultures of the kingdoms of Poland, Bohemia and Hungary and the culture of Austria, Bavaria and Saxony? Was the music created and cultivated in 15th-century Central Europe somehow different from the music of Italy and Burgundy? The lectures will be devoted to topics which are not part of the mainstream history of music, but have great significance for understanding Europe’s musical past. They will discuss the works of selected composers (Petrus Wilhelmi, Radomski, Tourout), as well as the genres popular in Central Europe (Latin songs, motets). Attention will focus on various centres of musical life (courts, universities, cathedrals, literary brotherhoods) and a number of manuscript collections (St Emmeram Codex, Glogauer Liederbuch, Speciálník Codex). Questions will be asked about the place of the Hungarian royal court of Matthias Corvinus, the Teutonic Order State in Prussia, and even such “distant” centres as the Ukrainian Lviv, in the fifteenth-century musical culture. Discussions will be initiated during lectures about selected topics relating to early musical culture and contemporary narratives about the past.
