Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: While the vast majority of Philip Roth's works focuses on questions of secular Jewish American identity, novels such as The Human Stain deal with the issue of racial identity and politics as well as political correctness outside of the Jewish fold. Way before Donald Trump took office as President of the United States, Philip Roth had written a novel that dealt with the question of how American democracy would be coping if a non-democratic, populist government were to seize power. In hindsight, The Plot Againsts America seeme to have described the scenerio that was to become real during the Trump Administration. Operation Shylock is one of Roth's few novels that are primarily set outside of America. It takes up a whole range of topics, including the Jewish-Palestinian conflict in Israel, anti-Semitism, the Holocaust and individual identity. In this course we will discuss the following works: Short Stories: "The Defender of the Faith" "Eli, the Fanatic" Novels: The Human Stain The Plot Against America Operation Shylock
