Inhalt: Science fiction has never been a tool for predicting the future. Rather, it is a way of seeing the present through new, alien eyes. This is especially true when science fiction concerns itself with gender. Conservatives, feminist, queer, and trans authors have all used science fiction as a way to question how we imagine gender, using their imaginary worlds to critique the present and inspire change. In this class, we will read science fiction from the United States across the 20th and 21st centuries. Through class readings and discussions, we will develop our analytical skills (including close reading) and develop our understanding of genre, form, and the history popular fiction
Empfohlene Literatur: Novels: Charlotte Perkins Gilman, Herland (1915) Theodore Sturgeon, Venus Plus X (1960) Short Stories: Tom Godwin, "The Cold Equations" (1954) Samuel Delany, "Aye, and Gomorrah…" (1967) Octavia Butler, "Bloodchild" (1984) Torrey Peters, "Infect Your Friends and Loved Ones" (2016) Additional readings will be announced at the beginning of the semester.
