Anwesenheitspflicht: It is expected that students will regularly participate in class meetings. Attendance will be mandatory on days with special assignments (presentations etc.).
Inhalt: In this seminar students will explore African American fictional and/or autobiographical writings that deal with the experience of slavery and the slave trade in the Americas. Particular attention will be paid to the genre of the so-called “slave narrative.” Students will learn the generic and thematic complexity of these texts and their intersection with the abolitionist movement. In addition, students will study how fictional treatments of slavery share similar features with autobiographical accounts. In the last part of the semester, we will engage African American novels on slavery that explore new and alternative strategies to represent a troubling past.
