Inhalt: The Gothic intensively deals with the unknown, the unspeakable, the suppressed, and the tabooed. Not only have female writers immensely contributed to the field of Gothic Literature from its beginnings, but throughout history, female existence was haunted by innumerous Patriarchy, sexism, misogyny, mental and physical abuse, exploitation, and violence. In this three-day intensive seminar (22.-24.07.), we look at female and feminist approaches to the Gothic genre by discussing and problematizing the concept of Female Gothic. We will work with theoretical texts as well as fictional women-authored Gothic literature and texts that feature “Gothic women" and the Gothic experience of women. Together, we analyze the critical potential of a female gothic and its limitations by the example of shorter and longer narratives from the 19th to the 21st century by authors such as Emily Dickinson, Edith Wharton, Sylvia Plath, Shirley Jackson, Octavia Butler, and Louise Erdrich. On our preliminary meeting on April 23, 18-20, we will discuss the class proceedings and assignments and finalize the reading list. Attendance is mandatory!
