Inhalt: COURSE DESCRIPTION In today's world, social media is often associated with fun and endless scrolling, however, it also serves as a crucial lifeline, before, during and after disasters. Platforms like Facebook's safety check and X (formerly Twitter) enable rapid safety updates and facilitate various disaster-related activities such as early warnings, coordination of humanitarian aid, accountability etc. Hence as disasters become more frequent in our interconnected world (e.g., Turkey-Syria earthquake, Greece fires (2023), German floods-2021, Cyclone Idai-2019, Haiti's 2010 and Nepal's 2015 earthquake, Japan earthquake and tsunami, Typhoon Haiyan-2013, Hurricane Katrina-2005), the relevance of social media and mobile technologies in disaster management has become more relevant. This course delves into this evolving landscape, introducing students to the intersection of disasters and social media/ICTs. Throughout the course, we will critically discuss the latest trends and debates surrounding the use of social media in disaster research. Additionally, we will engage in an interactive and practical exercise on the role of serious games in disaster research using a case study from Kerala, India. Lastly, we will explore qualitative content analysis of social media using MAXQDA. Assignments: class presentations using case studies and a written report.
