Voraussetzungen / Organisatorisches: In this course, we will discover African American Theatre in the United States since the end of World War II. Over the semester, we will look at several plays that are characteristic of each decade, from the 1950s up to the 2010s. These plays reflect and help us understand the numerous political, social and economic struggles African Americans faced since the mid-20th century, from segregation and redlining, over the Civil Rights movement and Black Power to Black Lives Matter. We will read 2 or 3 plays in their entirety while reading individual scenes of others. We will also include filmed performances and movie versions of some plays. The complete syllabus will be made available before the first session. Each participant will be required to hold one presentation over the semester.
