Inhalt: Medicine and literature are closely interwoven: Medical knowledge and illness experiences have entered (fictional) literature of all eras. Doctors and patients have processed their medical experiences in various literary forms. Literary knowledge, medical documentation practices, and life-writing have shaped the state of knowledge and medicine's ethical and practical working methods. Literature itself has repeatedly been ascribed both the power to infect and the power to heal. In this three-day intensive seminar (29.-31.07.), we want to look at the diverse dimensions of medicine and literature theoretically, methodologically, and creatively. Together, we will read and discuss theoretical key texts of the Medical Humanities and shorter and longer fictional texts, movies, TV series, and life-writing documents dealing with medical topics and medical lived experiences from the 19th to the 21st century.
