Requirements / organisational issues:
The lecture is designed to be accessible for both graduate level (Master) and undergraduate students in their last year. The only prerequisite is a good knowledge of classical mechanics. Familiarity with basic vector calculus is desired, but a brief introduction will be provided in the beginning of the lecture.
Contents:
This course provides an introduction into theoretical fluid dynamics. We will start the course with the derivation of the elementary equations of simple fluids and will finish it with a discussion of current trends and developments in the field of soft matter and complex fluids, such as microfluidic devices and active fluids.
Recommended reading list:
Simple liquids:
- Elementary Fluid Dynamics (D.J. Acheson)
- Physical Fluid Dynamics (D.J. Tritton)
- Fluid Dynamics for Physicists (T.E. Faber)
Complex liquids:
- The Theory of Polymer Dynamics (M. Doi and S.F. Edwards)
- An Introduction to Dynamics of Colloids (J.K.G. Dhont)
