The economy consistently ranks among the most important issues in an election. Demonstrating a relationship between the economy and the vote is the best evidence that political science can provide that governments are actually held accountable by their citizens. This course covers research in political science which seeks to explain how the economy and elections interact. How do voters’ evaluations of the economy influence their vote choice? How do regularities in voting behavior influence policy making, redistribution and other policies? How can the tools of economics help us better understand electoral competition? Class discussions will focus on applying the concepts to analyze concrete elections. Students will be asked to prepare their own brief analysis of elections and offer them for discussion in class.
