Requirements / organisational issues:
The aim of this seminar is to explore the diversity of Renaissance comedy, which comprises a wide range of different modes and styles – from crude farce to sophisticated satire, from the fantastic festive comedies of Shakespeare to the realistic and historically specific city comedies set in London.
Recommended reading list:
We will study the following plays in detail, focusing in particular on genre, form and theatrical strategies:
William Shakespeare, The Comedy of Errors (1592-94)
---, Twelfth Night (c. 1601)
Ben Jonson, Epicoene, or The Silent Woman (1609)
Please obtain good, critical editions of these plays (Arden, Oxford) and, ideally, read them before the semester.
Additional information:
In addition, we will consider plays that blur the boundaries between genres and morph from comedy into tragedy and vice versa.
Further materials will be made available in September via Jogustine/the JGU Reader and during the semester.
