Pastoral has been an enduring literary convention since its inception in classical antiquity. Concepts and motifs of the pastoral have been appropriated, to different ends, by authors across literary history, but the Renaissance was one of the heydays of the mode. This seminar will provide an overview of pastoral literature from different genres written between 1590 and 1685; its aim is to demonstrate the popularity of the pastoral during the period, illustrate the many different uses to which it was put and discuss the way writers and critical commentators reflected upon it.
Recommended reading list:
Students are asked to obtain a good, critical edition of William Shakespeare’s As You Like It (Arden Edition, Oxford World’s Classics) and, ideally, read the play before the semester.
Additional information:
Further materials will be made available by September (notification via Jogustine).
