Recent events have rekindled the debate about the legitimacy and role of the Confederacy in
American history and society, its insignia, myths, and monuments, and the reasons for the
American Civil War. This seminar wants to frame the events leading up to Secession and
eventually to the War, highlighting the central role of slavery in the conflict. It also wants to
put special focus on the Southern identity of the Confederate States, their reasoning and ideas
of nationalism, as well as their key figures, such as Jefferson Davis or Robert E. Lee. A closer
look at the Confederate administrative bodies, as well as their Constitution, will also contribute
to a better understanding of this chapter in United States history, and why it holds such a
pervasive importance in American cultural memory.
