This overview lecture will familiarise students with the many theories that comprise Cultural Studies. It will begin by defining Culture and Cultural Studies and will then work its way through theories of identity, class, gender and sexuality, race and ethnicity, and others. Students will normally be expected to read a theory text (sometimes in excerpts) in preparation for its presentation in the lecture. They will furthermore have a look at a cultural artefact (which can be a literary text, a pop song, an image, an art work, a building, etc.). The presented theories will then be applied to this artefact. Depending on the size of the group, there should be room for discussion as well. Theory texts and artefacts will be available on Reader by the start of the term, as will be the provisional timetable.
The Prüfungsleistung for this lecture is a 90-minute exam.
Contents:
This lecture course provides a survey of foundational concepts and theories of Cultural Studies. It forms the methodological basis of all other Cultural Studies courses in the department.
Recommended reading list:
The readings that form the basis of the individual lectures are available as master copies in Frau Wächter's office (01-577, open daily from 9am-12.30pm) from mid-September. Further materials will be made available via the JGU Reader.
Additional information:
An exam covering all of the lecture's contents (30 mins) will take place in the final week of the semester. Please check your exam regulations whether this applies to you.
