In this course we will discuss Chinese American Relations from the 18th to the 21st century. The objective is to add an Eastern perspective to the concept of Transnational American Studies. We will begin with Benjamin Franklin's reception of the Chinese philosopher Confucius and its repercussions on the Foundation of the United States of America. The Transcendentalists reconnected with Asian philosophy, as did Ezra Pound for his creation of modern poetry. Chinese railroad workers and immigrants reacted to the American experience in forms of life writing, while Americans invented stereotypical productions to make fun of the Chinese. In postmodern art exiled Chinese artists conjoined the two countries in their critical designs.
We will discuss the following documents:
Benjamin Franklin, "The Morals of Confucius", Pennsylvania Gazette (1737); Autobiography Part II
Correspondence of John Adams and Thomas Jefferson about Confucius
Henry David Thoreau, Excerpts from Walden
Ezra Pound, Canto LIII
Chinese Railroad Workers Project, Stanford University
Jade Snow Wong, Fifth Chinese Daughter (1950)
Charlie Chan in Shanghai (movie)
Edward Albee, Quotations from Chairman Mao
Eddie Huang, Fresh Off the Boat (2013) and TV series (2015)
Donald Trump and China
