Requirements: active participation (oral report) and book review; the seminar also includes a field trip to visit the exhibition Once Upon a Time in America: Three Centuries of US- American Art, 1650-1950 (Wallraf-Richartz-Museum & Foundation Corboud, Cologne, Nov. 23, 2018 - March 24, 2019) in January of 2019.
Contents:
This graduate course discusses new methodologies and theoretical approaches in Early American Studies. We will study a sample books published in recent years. The monographs and collections of essays selected for this course have contributed in programmatic ways to our understanding of early American literature, culture, history in such fields as Native American studies, material and environmental studies, transnationalism, archipelagic studies, religious studies, print culture, history and the archive, performance and art history etc. The aim of this course is to practice critical readings and to survey the development of a specific field of research in American Studies. Participants have to give book presentations and learn how to write scholarly and publishable revies.
